Family Fitness Fun
How much exercise do kids need?  The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recommends Children ages 2 and older get at least one hour of “moderate” to “vigorous” exercise each day. Keep in mind, walking to and from school, and other everyday habits can go toward that hour.

Starting and maintaining a fitness habit with your family can be tricky, especially in chilly temps.  Here are a few ways to get healthier together.

1.  Lead by example
2.  Start ‘em young
3.  Keep up the creativity
4.  Forget your Genes  (Bad knees or obesity runs in your family, no excuse.)
5.  Set realistic Goals
6.  Divide and Conquer (Exercise individually, then discuss your workout.)
7.  Reward with activity

Sobering Statistics
Everyday, it seems like there’s a new study released or another startling statistic put out about the how obesity rates are climbing among U.S. children.  Need more motivation to get your family moving?  Here’s just a sampling of the many stats and research available on our nation’s expanding waistlines.

  • The centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that obesity rates have steadily been increasing in the United States over the past 20 years.  According to the most recent data available, in the state of Michigan, 27.7 percent of the population is overweight.
  • The American Heart Association reveals, “more than 9 million children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 10 years are considered overweight.”
  • And from the Journal of the American Medical Association “Nearly 14 percent of preschool children between the ages 2 and 5 years were overweight in 2003-2004, up from 10.3 percent in 1999-2000.

A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body
More and more kids have become sedentary.  According to the American Academy of Pediatrics the average child watches 3 hours of TV a day.  Parents need to make sure kids get enough physical exercise and eat appropriately.  Here are some tips for raising fit kids.

  • Help your child participate in a variety of activities that are age-appropriate.  Let them choose what they would like to do.
  • Incorporate activity into daily routines such as taking the stairs, walking to school, biking to the park, etc.
  • Assign your child chores; unloading the dishwasher, raking leaves, walking the dog, etc.
  • Embrace a healthier lifestyle yourself, so you’ll be a positive role model for your family.
  • Keep it fun so that your child comes back for more.

For further information on how parents and kids can lead a healthy lifestyle, check out the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s wonderful website: www.mypyramid.gov.
